I'm wondering if anyone in my readership or their friends has had kids at a Waldorf school, and what their experience has been. I'm specifically interested in how they handle young children and science. The impression I got was that they won't necessarily answer kids' questions about how things work, but that may not be accurate. What I am trying to determine is whether what they do is basically encourage the kids to investigate and poke at things and generate ideas, rather than giving them prepackaged answers, or what they do is flatly refuse to answer precise questions and instead tell a fairy tale about it. (The former is often a very effective long term teaching strategy that I have used myself. The later, however, I do not find personally and professionally very comfortable, and I think it would be an especially poor fit for my own geeklet.) The teacher I spoke with this week was so vague on this I couldn't really get a useful sense of what actually happened in the classroom, hence my question for folks who have actually experienced Waldorf schools in some capacity.

While I'm asking about schools, does anyone have experience with the following or know someone who does and would be willing to talk with me?

Cambridge Friends School (or Quaker education in general)

Fayerweather School

Leslie Ellis

(and Waldorf, but I mentioned that in my previous post)

Anyone who has had actual recent experience with the Somerville Public Schools (particularly if they have a very bright, somewhat immature, rambunctious and often defiant little boy) might be helpful for me to talk with too.

And, as always, my homeschooling friends and their homeschooling friends are invited to add their insight and experience. :-)
