The home inspection revealed the house to be *WAY* more broken than we had thought. 50 to 60K of work that needed immediate attention, and I am guessing about 100K of work overall.
The kind of liquid cash we just don't and won't have.
And it was way too pretty in the upper unit, far more pretty than we need (or even really want) while being an absolute wreck in so many ways. Lots of cosmetic stuff done while structural stuff was neglected.
What I really want it something worn but sound. I don't need pretty in a kind of finished yuppie way, and I don't even like a lot of that decorating style. (Although this place was actually really nice in the upper unit. Their taste wasn't so different from mine.) And I can do *a lot* with curtains and paint. (Anyone who saw what our condo looked like right when we bought knows what I mean, or for that matter how both of our rental places looked initially.)
I'm really fond of our current place. (It also has the advantage of being the right kind of space split and the right size. Most of the places we've seen seem to have *way* more space than Chip and I will ever need, while often not being enough space for mattlistener and mud_puppy in the other unit.) Not that I think (at all!) that our landlords are selling. I presume that they are still planning on returning from DC at the end of the summer. (But Chip did send them email about it today, just in case...)
So I guess in a lot of ways we are looking for something as close to what we have right now as possible (although the flat roof does make Chip nervous. Does anyone know how difficult a flat roof is to inspect initially and to maintain?)
