No more gas drops for Benjamin. When we gave them to him last night, he threw up the entire contents of his stomach. (It was very different from usual baby spitting up. This was a rather impressive quantity.)

He's fine now, and we talked to the on call pediatrician that night, who wasn't particularly concerned as long as it didn't happen again and there weren't any other symptoms. But it looks like we need to find some other way to help the digestive issues.

It does not fit the pattern for colic at all. I'm hoping it's just an immature digestive system and that it will all calm down once we find a better way to help him. There are, however, some scary chronic digestive system problems in my family, so if it doesn't improve soon he goes to to pediatrician.

I can't remember the age is appropriate but I've been told fennel seed tea or chamomile tea (very weak in both cases) can help.

Never tried it myself, but I've heard so many parents swear by "Gripe Water" -- used regularly in many other cultures (English, Jamaican, Indian). The ingredients vary, but usually include ginger, dill or both. You can get it online or at Indian markets. (There used to be one right in Somerville!) For whatever it's worth. Good luck.

I assume you've also checked out the possibility of GRED (reflux)? One of ours had some mild reflux issues.

So far he normally spits up very rarely, so I don't think it's reflux. (After we gave him the drops was very much an exception to his normal pattern.)

What is a "gas drop"? Is it something like baby strength Maalox?

gas drops

they are called infant Mylicon, and they help with excess gas in babies. Our pediatrician recommended it to us, when Meredith was having frequent, frequent painful gas, plus some screaming fits that had no apparent cause - but were hitting the 'pain' notes in her screams. I'd already tried eliminating dairy and suspicious veggies from my diet, and it didn't do much. The drops have helped her, at least. I'm really sorry to hear Benjamin had such a negative reaction!
