to expand: I had lots of reasons for moving back here, but one of them was definitely the realization that my parents were getting old and I didn't want to be on the other side of the continent from them any more.
health has degenerated a lot for them both in the six years since I first really noticed this, but it's particularly pronounced for my father. he's just kind of wearing out. he sleeps constantly (probably >20 hours a day by now. he is always falling asleep.) and he can't move quickly and most of the time he is clearly mentally somewhere else. he's perfecttly lucid (brilliant and funny generally) the rest of the time, but mostly he's just not present, like he's already drifting out of this reality most of the time.
