We now have a steady stream of birds at our feeder. When we put it up, it took a while for the birds to find it. The first was a huge blue jay, followed by flocks of little brown birds I can't identify. They still are around quite a bit, but we also have a small flock of chickadees as regular visitors. Then there is the pair of cardinals. The female was first, but now she seems to have a mate, or at least a hopeful hanging around in her general vicinity.

Benjamin loves the birds and squeals with delight whenever he sees them, which is frequently whenever he looks out the living room window. There are flocks of them in the tree by our front porch almost constantly. There is the occasional squirrel in the tree, but I haven't actually seem them on the porch, let alone the feeder. Perhaps they are intimidated by how the birds outnumber them.

Cardinals and blue jays (which I seem to recall are related) don't migrate, so it's not too surprising to see them now.

Got chickadees?

We do have chickadees. They are among our most recent visitors.

Cardinals and blue jays are not related. Jays are members of the corvid family with ravens and crows. Corvids and pscittincines are the brains of the bird world, so jays are much smarter than we might expect.

Cardinals are very pretty, but not corvids.

what kind of feeder do you have? what kind of seed do you stock it with?

It's a little clear plastic feeder, composed of a bin that holds a couple of cups of seed and a tiny roof over it. It screws onto the porch railing. We use the wild bird seed mix that we get at Tags.

The little brown ones are probably house sparrows or wrens. They are looked down upon in the birding world, but I think they are cute...
