looking for a new pediatrician
Jun. 4th, 2006 09:07 pmWe're looking for a new pediatrician for Benjamin.
Things we need:
1) Reasonably close to where we are, ideally Cambridge, Arlington or West Somerville. (I would love either on the Red Line or a mile or two from our house, which is in Ball Square, Somerville, because we may not always have an available car in a minor emergency. I'm willing to be flexible on this, within reason, at this point, however.)
2) Not excessively into medicating kids. (Not, for example, someone who routinely prescribes lots of antibiotics "just in case".)
3) Attachment parenting friendly.
4) Unlikely to over-simplify explanations to the point where there is too little information to be useful. (Less tactfully put, unlikely to talk to us like we are stupid, which seems to be an annoying habit far too many pediatricians have.)
Our current pediatrician meets all these criteria, but he is also way too busy and distracted whenever we go there. Of at least equal if not more concern, some of his nursing staff seem barely minimally competent.
EDIT: Chip reminds me that it would also be important that the pediatrician take fairly seriously the family medical history of widespread, severe Crohn's Disease, without completely freaking out about it. I would imagine, however, that that would be likely to go with items two and four.
