It turns out that the pumping equipment is all too light to stay in place well enough to be effectively cleaned by the dishwasher, even when initially secured as tightly as I can manage by the clips attached to the dishwasher designed for securing light items. Some if it is small enough to fall through also.

(Washing pumping equipment was the primary reason for purchasing the dishwasher.)

Time to improvise something that attaches easily enough to use with one hand (with the baby on the other arm) and does not fall apart during the wash cycle... (My first thought was twist ties, but the paper will disintegrate.)

They sell little baskets with lids that you can fill with little pump bits and toss in the dishwasher. We got one at target, in the "bottle" section of the baby aisle. Very handy.

You beat me to it. I was going to say exactly the same thing.

Ditto. I was also going to say that you might want to put the bits in
the "silverware" section, and put a wide-mesh "lid" on the silverware
basket. So what if it bounces around, it's getting cleaned. As long as the bouncing around doesn't break it.

There are these great plastic mesh baskets designed specifically for washing bottle/pump stuff in the dishwasher. Try Target, K-mart or Babies-R-Us (which has a great choice of bottle baskets). We use these baskets all the time here.

Twist-ties

If you are looking for a twist-tie replacement to secure the basket that the above people have already recommended, you could try zip ties. Taking one out is not a one handed process, but you should only be installing the basket once, and then using it repeatedly, right?

And on the penny-pincher front, thin nylon stockings hold all sorts of things - tie the open end to something that doesn't move. May not be feasable with baby on one arm.

Velcro wire ties work fine in water too.

low tech solution?

when I wash plastic container lids in the dishwasher, to keep them from flying all over the place I place them under a colander or strainer. Do you have something similarly heavy and porous to use?

There are plastic twist ties too. I may have some to get you started....

We have two baskets designed for such things...they can be purchased as well. FirstYear makes them as I recall. Don't reinvent the wheel or give up hope just yet. Visit your local Baby store and see what solutions others have used. *hug* -H...
